Do society muralists even really exist anymore, in the tradition of Poole, and Robert Chanler, etc. Poole did such wonderful murals in the rotunda at Castle Hill, designed by David Adler.

I'm enchanted with the idea of him as David Adler's great love---certainly both had socially proper foxhunting wives in common. Going off-island for a moment, David Adler's exquisite house for Abram Poole's brother Ralph in Lake Bluff , in shabby condition, was still going begging for a buyer six months ago, and now that a decorative painting by Abram Poole from that house is currently on the market---not a good sign for the future of the house, once decorative elements start being stripped :-(

Not vast, in a good neighborhood, a masterwork by a famous architect, not expensive, still unsold:
http://www.trulia.com/property/3065016883-1010-Green-Bay-Rd-Lake-Bluff-IL-60044

Abram Poole Painting:
http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/wall-decorations/paintings/large-neo-classical-landscape-abram-poole/id-f_377254/The Down East Dilettantehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13950254669198151850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6807386654523336456.post-29032503853207621582009-11-19T20:57:58.684-05:002009-11-19T20:57:58.684-05:00Another glowing example of the almost peerless tal...Another glowing example of the almost peerless talent H.T. Lindeberg had with making absolutely magnificent manor homes. Stately yet overflowing with charm.

It is such a shame that in 2009 we lack this quality of architect as well as the skilled builders who knew how to take leaded glass, slate, flagstone, wood, ivy et al and make something so wonderful.Glimmerglassnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6807386654523336456.post-87310643316313709272009-11-19T09:51:07.064-05:002009-11-19T09:51:07.064-05:00I know the house well. It is kept in fabulous condition by its current owners, but sadly the dining room murals are long gone.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6807386654523336456.post-82498151514685651772009-11-19T09:26:24.436-05:002009-11-19T09:26:24.436-05:00Now Abram Poole is a name one doesn't hear of ...Now Abram Poole is a name one doesn't hear of very often anymore, unless it is in a footnote, ie his brief marital experiment with Mercedes de Acosta. Though I continue to hear, periodically, that AP was probably the love of David Adler's life. Could be just rumour though. An Aesthete's Lamenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09620941811191294750noreply@blogger.com
