The Alfred Coster Schermerhorn Residence

The Alfred Coster Schermerhorn residence designed by Leroy P. Ward c. 1929 in Matinecock.  Schermerhorn was a stock broker and senior partner in the firm of Fahnestock & Co.  He divorced his wife, Ruth Fahnestock, in 1937 and she remarried the same day of the divorce.  In 1945 he was appointed the Washington representative of Chase Manhattan Bank of New York.  Click HERE to see the A.C. 'Hilaire'

'Hilaire', the George E. Fahys estate designed by James O'Connor c. 1910 in Matinecock.  Fahys was president of Joseph Fahys & Co. and the Alvin Silver Company of Sag Harbor.  He was also a founder of the Piping Rock Club which sat across the street from 'Hilaire'.  At age 89 he shot and killed himself in the lavatory of his study.  Click HERE for more on 'Hilaire' which has since been demolished.  Photo from Examples of Work by Lewis & Valentine, 1916.

'Farnsworth'

'Farnsworth', the Cornelius Kingsley Garrison (C.K.G.) Billings estate designed by Guy Lowell c. 1914 in Matinecock, with landscaping by A. Robeson Sargent. Billings was president of Peoples Gas Light and Coke Co., Chicago and chairman of the board of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. The estate was demolished c. 1966. 'Marney'

'Marney', the Sidney Alexander Mitchell estate designed by James O'Connor c. 1924 in Matinecock. Mitchell, son of Sidney Z. Mitchell who resided next door, was an attorney, president and director of Bonbright & Co., special attache to the Court of St. James, president of the Federation of French Alliances in the United States, vice-president of both the Institute for Crippled and Disabled and the Institution for Relief in Belgium and author of S.Z. The Sidney Z. Mitchell Estate

The Sidney Zollicoffer Mitchell estate designed by James O'Connor c. 1924 in Matinecock with landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers and O'Connor. Mitchell was the chairman of the board of Electric Bond & Share Co. and founder of Northwest Electric Supply & Construction Company.
