The J.E.S. Hadden Estate

'Dogwood', the Mrs. J.E. Smith Hadden estate (nee Emily Georgina Hamilton) designed by Peabody, Wilson & Brown c. 1918 in Jericho.  J.E. Smith Hadden was a silk importer and died four years before the construction of 'Dogwood'.  It is unknown if the residence is extant.

'Ivy Hall'

A 1931 advertisement for 'Ivy Hall', originally the Ralph Julius Preston estate designed by Warren & Wetmore c. 1904 in Jericho. Preston, an attorney, was deputy Red Cross Commissioner for Europe during WWI. Preston's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of William Payne Thompson of 'Longfields' in Old Westbury. In 1906 the estate was sold to James Blackstone Taylor, brother of Talbot J. Taylor of 'Talbot House' in Cedarhurst. Taylor was a partner with his brother in Talbot J. Taylor & Co., partner with Taylor, Bates & Co., and president of Cove Neck Realty Corp. He was also president of Upressit Metal Cap Corp. and founder and president of Upressit Products Corp. In 1920 the estate was sold to Elbert H. Gary, a founder and chairman of the board of U.S. Steel Corp. 'Ivy Hall' was demolished c. 1950 but click HERE to see where it stood on google earth.

The William P.T. Preston Sr. Estate

The William Payne Thompson Preston estate designed by Peabody, Wilson & Brown c. 1924 in Jericho. Preston was a partner in the brokerage firm of G.M.P. Murphy & Co. and at some point owned 'Longfields' in Old Westbury. The house no longer appears extant but would have sat roughly HERE on google earth.

'The Lanterns'

'The Lanterns', the Herbert M. Harriman estate designed by Cross & Cross c. 1915 in Jericho. Harriman was a member on the banking/railroad family of the same name and in 1921 picked up and moved to Ireland with his third wife. 'Jericho Farm'

'Jericho Farm', the Middleton Schoolbred Burrill estate designed by John Russell Pope c. 1906 in Jericho. The estate was one of the largest, consisting of close to 1,000 acres. Burrill was an attorney with the firm Burrill, Zabriskie and Burrill. His roots in America go back quite some time, his obituary says that his earliest American ancestor, George Burrill, settled in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1630. He was also related to a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1953 the estate became the Meadow Brook Country Club with the residence serving as the clubhouse. The Mrs. J.E.S. Hadden Residence

The residence of Mrs. J.E. Smith Hadden designed by Peabody, Wilson & Brown c. 1918 in Jericho. The Hadden's son was married to Julian Peabody's sister. I do not believe the house still stands.

'Jericho House'

'Jericho House', the George Edward Kent estate designed by William Welles Bosworth c. 1906 in Jericho. The estate had Olmsted landscaping. Not much is known on this place, it was demolished years ago. Kent's wife Lilias Juanita Grace was the sister of William Russell Grace Jr. who resided at 'Crossroads' in Old Westbury. When 'The Lanterns' Was For Sale

A brochure advertising 'The Lanterns', the Herbert Melville Harriman estate designed by Cross & Cross c. 1915 in Jericho. Ellen Shipman did the landscaping for Harriman. The house was demolished sometime in the 1950's.

'Jericho Farm'

'Jericho Farm' was built for Middleton Schoolbred Burrill by John Russell Pope c. 1906 in Jericho. The estate originally consisted of roughly 1,000 acres and sat up on a hill overlooking the Hempstead Plains. Today the home is the clubhouse for the Meadow Brook Club, and a golf course has been built over much of the estate's property. Click HERE to see 'Jericho Farm' on google earth.

Jericho Friends Meeting House

The Jericho Friends Meeting House was erected in 1788, and stands off of old Jericho Turnpike.  The notable Quaker Elias Hicks lived nearby and is buried in the cemetery here along with many other notable Quaker names, like Underhill, Willis, Willets, Seaman and of course, Hicks.  Click HERE to see the Jericho Friends Meeting House on google earth.

Valentine Hicks House / Maine Maid Inn

Built in the early 1800s for Timothy Tredwell and later owned by Valentine and Abigail Hicks, members of the very prominent Quaker family. During the pre civil war years, this house was possibly a part of the 'Underground Railroad' and had a secret attic room that may have hid runaway slaves. Today it operates as the 'Maine Maid Inn', a restaurant. Click HERE to see the house on google earth.

Malcolm House

Originally belonging to the Townsend family, Dr. James Townsend (born in 1729) moved to the homestead with his wife Mary Hicks.  After his death in 1790, the house was sold to John Jackson, a descendant of Robert Jackson, an original settler to Hempstead.  John Jackson's great granddaughter Phoebe married James Malcolm sometime in the early 19th Century, and the house remained in the Malcolm's hands until it was deeded to Nassau County in 1974.  Click HERE to see the homestead on google earth.
