'Nirvana'

'Nirvana', the William Gould Brokaw estate designed by Little & O'Connor c. 1900 in Kings Point.  Brokaw's father was William Vail Brokaw, co-founder of Brokaw Brothers, clothiers.  His brother Clifford resided at 'The Elms' in Glen Cove, his sister Mrs. Henry B. Gilbert at 'Sunshine', and other sister Mrs. James E. Martin at 'Martin Hall', both in Kings Point.  'Nirvana' was demolished c. 1932 following a fire.

'The Elms', the Clifford Vail Brokaw Sr. estate designed by Charles A. Platt c. 1912 in Glen Cove. Brokaw was a stockbroker and member of Brokaw Brothers Clothing Co. which was run by his family. 'The Chimneys', the Howard Crosby Brokaw estate designed by Horace Trumbauer c. 1916 in Brookville. Brokaw inherited Brokaw Brothers, a clothing company, upon his father Isaac V. Brokaw's death. During World War I Brokaw served as the head of the American Red Cross in New York. His brother Irving lived at 'Frost Mill Lodge' in Mill Neck. 'The Chimneys'

'The Chimneys', the Howard Crosby Brokaw estate designed by Horace Trumbauer c. 1916 in Muttontown. Brokaw was the head of Brokaw Brothers, clothiers, and retired from the business in 1919. 'The Elms'

'The Elms', the Clifford V. Brokaw estate designed by Charles Platt c. 1912 in Glen Cove. The house has similarities to John T. Pratt's 'Manor House' (also by Charles Platt). Brokaw was a stockbroker who set a record in 1927 when he sold his seat on the NY Stock Exchange for $235,000 (he purchased it in 1918 for less than $60,000). 'The Elms' Farm Group

The farm group for 'The Elms', owned by Clifford V. Brokaw and designed by Alfred Hopkins c. 1912 in Glen Cove. The property sat just south of Lattingtown Road above the Pratt compound (though it has since been demolished and replaced with a housing development). For those interested in Alfred Hopkins I encourage you to check out 'Modern Farm Buildings', a book Hopkins had published c. 1913 (and updated in 1920).

When 'The Chimneys' Was For Sale

A brochure advertising 'The Chimneys', the Howard Brokaw estate designed by Horace Trumbauer between 1916-17 in Muttontown. Brokaw, president of Brokaw Brothers clothing, wanted a house that was "long, low and not formal". The house serves as the clubhouse to the Muttontown Country Club today.
