'Rumpus House'

'Rumpus House', the Carl J. Schmidlapp estate designed by Peabody, Wilson & Brown c. 1920 in Mill Neck with landscaping by Ellen Shipman and Ferruccio Vitale, now under the stewardship of the North Shore Land Alliance.  After a successful campaign to purchase the property the NSLA needs some help figuring out what to do with 'Rumpus House', which has sat vacant for a number of years.  The house would be a bit of a project but it is quite a house, located across the street from Upper Francis Pond and adjacent to the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden.  Feel free to share any ideas in the comments section below.  Click HERE and HERE for more on 'Rumpus House'.  A tremendous thank you to the North Shore Land Alliance for allowing me to visit and photograph the property.

'Hill House'

'Hill House', the Anton Gysberti Hodenpyl estate built c. 1900 in Mill Neck with landscaping by Ossian C. Simmonds.  Hodenpyl was a partner in the brokerage firm of King, Hodenpyl & Co. and Hodenpyl, Hardy & Co.  He was also president of the Commonwealth Power, Railway & Light Co., Michigan Light Co., Union Railway, Gas & Electric Co., and numerous other power and rail companies in the midwest.  Hodenpyl died in 1933 and his wife in 1935.  In 1938 the estate was sold to a William Simpson and 'Hill House' was demolished c. 1940.

'Beaver Brook Farm'

'Beaver Brook Farm', the Henry Lewis Batterman Sr. estate designed by Harrie Lindeberg c. 1914 in Mill Neck with landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers. Batterman was vice-president of the H. Batterman Department Store which became Frederick Loeser & Co. in 1909 after Batterman sold out. He was also a nationally known breeder of Guernsey cattle which eventually became a milk business that served the estates on the North Shore.
