Spring Hill Outbuildings

The service buildings to 'Spring Hill', the Henry Carnegie Phipps estate in Old Westbury.  Some of these were occupied by stablehands and others that tended the estate.

The largest of the outbuildings had a very big beech tree fall onto it sometime recently.

My house looked more or less like the first picture when I bought it, with collapsed bits and all. And I want the doors in the last picture!

As a teenager, I was a stable hand quartered in the dilapidated house
(first photo). I was there when the dropping of the atomic bomb was announced in August, 1945. Mrs Kitosky provided room and board to 3-4 employees. Mr. Carmichael worked in the green houses.
There should be a basketball court nearby.
Arthur Little lived in the house high on the hill and maintained the poultry houses.

I believe the house at the top to be the house my family lived in while my father, Ken Matthews, was a chauffer for the Phipps'. This was back in the 60's. I have pictures of us there and these buildings look similar. I know at the time the pilot (Bobby James) and the Stableman were living in the same little area. I seem to remember two donkeys in the barn named Joseph and Mary. Wow, what a mess! If anyone remembers my dad working there, I know it was a long time ago, please let me know. Would it be possible for you to post the photos that you have? Maybe it would help you find someone who knew your dad while there.
