T.R. Jr.'s Old Orchard

'Old Orchard', the residence of Theodore Roosevelt Jr., designed by William McMillan in Cove Neck c. 1938. Roosevelt had wanted to reside in his father's 'Sagamore Hill' next door but his mother instead gave him a few acres of land behind the house to build his own. Ted Jr. went on to land an infantry regiment and a tank battalion on Utah Beach in the June 6th, 1944 Normandy invasion. He received numerous military decorations including the Medal of Honor. Curious that he wanted to live in a wonderful piece of Victorian oompah like Sagamore Hill but built a restrained, deliberately spare house like Old Orchard!

I agree with An Aesthete's Lament, as I find Sagamore Hill rich with history, but Old Orchard far more - well - filled with possiblities and a chance for one's own personality to take hold. Sagamore Hill would never be anyone else's home but President Roosevelt's and his personality would always dominate, even after death. I'd gladly begin a long term investment of taste and style to make my home in Old Orchard - Robert
