'Woodbury House'

'Woodbury House', the James Watson Webb estate designed by Cross & Cross c. 1915 in Woodbury. Today the estate makes up the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. Click HERE to see 'Woodbury House' on google earth. Click HERE to see pictures of 'Woodbury House' from a 1919 issue of Architectural Record.

Alas, Zach, it seems rather sad and forlorn now, as compared to the years of private ownership under the Webbs. The surrounding fencing leads me to wonder if it's closed up due to park budget issues in the current economy. Bereft of all the previously seen landscaping in your old photographs, I hope it will return to that splendor at some point. Thank you for sharing. robert

It's interesting, isn't it, how some communities will buy these old estates and make them the houses a source of community pride, and others will just pick away at the properties, with no master plan, until they've made hash of them. This seems to be one of the latter cases. Sad. (although frankly, the house isn't really a very great building, interesting, grand, but far from a masterwork.
