The
Bronson Winthrop estate designed by
Delano & Aldrich c. 1910 in
Muttontown. This was Winthrop's second
Delano & Aldrich house, the first being '
Muttontown Meadows' built c. 1903 next door. Winthrop was senior partner in the firm of
Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts. After receiving his law degree from Columbia in 1889 he joined the firm of
Root, Howard, Stimson & Winthrop, of which Elihu Root was a partner. In 1901 Winthrop and future Secretary of War
Henry Stimson broke off to form their own firm. He was also involved in philanthropy and was a member of the
Charity Organization Society's Committee on Criminal Courts which helped establish a new Family Court separate from the existing criminal courts in NYC. He passed away in 1944 at the age of 80. Click

Impressive. Very impressive. The garden front is quite stately. A trifle large but I'd be happy living there.
altho this is not my favorite style, at least this one has some variation in the projecting wings with the porches and the garden and fountain in between. also, i don't have to go to the basement to get a snack.
