'Greycroft' Gardens
The gardens of 'Greycroft', the Lorenzo E. Woodhouse estate designed by Isaac Henry Green c. 1891 in East Hampton. Woodhouse was a stock broker from Vermont and his obituary, while given its own article, is only two sentences long. Woodhouse died in 1935 at the age of 73 after suffering a nervous breakdown.

Parts of the Woodhouse grounds are now a preserve. The playhouse by Burrall Hoffman survives as a separate house. Graycroft was long torn down, and the foundation and some of the garden were purchased by designer Benjamin (not to be confused with Billy) Baldwin, who turned the foundation into a sunken garden. I visited Baldwin a couple of times with mutual friends, and his garden creation, modernist, innovative, and incorporating parts of the Woodhouse garden, including the pergola, was sheer magic.
oops, forgot to mention where: North side of Hunting Lane.
Also worth mentioning that after he died, Baldwin's very cerebral minimalist house also go the middle class remodeling that one comes to expect in the Hamptons. So few people know when they've got something good already, no matter what the era.
