'Woodside'
'Woodside', the James Abercrombie Burden estate designed by Delano & Aldrich c. 1916 in Muttowntown. Click HERE for more on 'Woodside' and click HERE to see the brochure from when 'Woodside' was for sale.
One of the best. Although, that divided window for bathrooms above the front entrance that ever so slightly breaks the otherwise perfect rhythm has bothered me since I was a kid.
Many years ago, Architectural Digest published an essay about this house by Louis Auchincloss (he married Mrs. Burden's granddaughter)
I'm not sure if she ever owned Woodside, but her last estate is now the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course located on the North side of Jericho Turnpike one block West of Woodbury Road.
Zach, I don't know if you have ever come across this blog about Syosset, called the Syosset scrapbook, just a little amatuer site ,but if you are from Syosset it we be considered outstanding ,they put a lot of work into collecting all that memorabilia and photos. Anyway when I viewed todays entry and it seemed I had seen that before but tell me,is some of the info incorrect on Syosset site, also you may find some different photos there, you may like it. http://syossetscrapbook.freeservers.com/scrapbookpart7.html#Estates
ditto AAL. boring front with too many too small windows for the size of the house. interiors nice but outbuildings are spectacular.
that syosset notebook site is fantastic. lots of different sources of pix. check it out. it's a great complement to this site. speaking of which, zach, they show an estate i don't think i've see before - Little Ipswich - do you have any info or pix for that one.
security word def - "deness" - to remove a large possibly mythical creature from the water.

Everything about this house, outside and in, is wonderful. Are plans to subdivide the estate still on hold?

Zach: Was Woodside subsequently owned by Paul Mellon'd sister, Ailsa Mellon Bruce?

Stately, well-mannered, slightly dull. I honestly prefer its outbuildings.
I like this house but have to agree with AAL on this. The entrance facade reminds me of Peterloon but doesn't have as much charm.
