'Peacock Point'

The first 'Peacock Point', the Charles Otis Gates estate designed by Charles A. Rich of Lamb & Rich c. 1902 in Lattingtown.  Gates was president of the Royal Baking Power Company and professor of English literature at Adelphi College.  He died in 1906 and his widow would go on to build 'Dormer House' in Lattingtown.  'Peacock Point' was demolished in 1914 and replaced with a Walker & Gillette house by the same name for H.P. Davison seen HERE.

I like it; those Flemish(?) end caps on the roof look good on this house & except for the center section of the front, which is too overloaded with ornamentation, it's a nice, clean look. DED, I also noted the rear patio has the requisite clipped laurel(?) trees [referencing your comment about 'Chateau Ivor'].

I'm puzzled why the Widow Gates would leave this great location to build 'Dormer House' inland?

Are you sure that Lamb and Rich didn't consult CPH Gilbert on those gables?

I know, I know. Nobody likes a smart ass. Or a "Smartie" as my southern mother-in-law called them.

Magnus, I like those gables & suspect you're just anti-Flemish.

The real reason I'm commenting again so soon is I just did the math -- this house stood for only 12 years. I'm sure it was built to stand for much longer.

What is very unfortunate is whether you like this house )love teh flemish gables) or the later replacement, which I much prefer, both houses should have lasted longer and today the magnificent waterfront site at Peacock Point oddly remains empty and without a grand home.

For those using either Bing or Google, there was a third house, located on the Peacock Point site pictured on Bing which is gone from Google earth. Once again Bing lags far behind with their updates.

Just strange that such a beautiful site would chew up and spit out so many homes in such a short period of time.

I agree, I like the second incarnation much better, but the first also should have survived.

Let us also not forget that the second incarnation is where the Woodwards dined on that fateful night when Ann shot Billy...

Off topic but just wanted to post that the HPHS blog has a nice piece on Pembroke under construction, highlighting among other things, the design of the advanced septic system, lol. Great new information and I know someone driving back from NY to the coast of Maine will want to get to that post as soon as possible.

HPHS, lol, I forced myself to check Genius since God was not an option offered.

I thought the Woodward's had dined at the Baker's with the Windsor's on that fateful night.

Woodward's were at the Baker's I think.

The Woodward's dined and drank at "Vikings Cove"

Of course you're right; see what staggering around Manhattan, on steroids with walking pneumonia does to you memory cells...

Hmmmm, Indeed I was in the car for the eight hour drive, and missed comments this day.

Since I'm so late for this party, I'll refrain from taking the CPH bait, except to say that 'genius' is a term not to be misused. Not mentioning any names that perhaps don't belong up there with Michelangelo...
