'Overland House'

'Overland House', the George Rose estate designed by Hoppin & Koen c. 1910 in Old Westbury.  Click HERE and HERE for more on 'Overland House' which was demolished c. 1950.

If you go to Google Earth Streetview you can see parts of the perimeter wall at Wheatley and Guys Road.

Hoppin & Koen's very idiosyncratic work doesn't look like anyone else's. When one thinks 'that looks like a Hoppin & Koen house', one is rarely wrong

I couldn't imagine a conversation between the architectural firm of Hoppin & Koen and that of Mellor, Meigs and Howe. One could only suspect that MMH would retort "we don't design banks".

Overland House looks to have been more softly executed with this Garrison, NY estate (I believe done by architect James Gamble Rogers):

Is it absolutely certain that the brick wall on Wheatley Rd at Guys Lane is in fact from Overland House? The house at 4 Guys Lane was constructed in 1997. Prior to that a very large old 3 story frame house had stood on the site. Wikimapia has the location of Overland House situated at the cul de sac of Guys Lane which would be just steps away from the actual location of this large shingled style home torn down in the mid-90's. These 2 very large homes could not have existed in the same location. Was the brick wall actually part of the estate containing the old frame house and not Overland? I've always presumed that the entrance drive to Overland House was via the old tree lined drive, part of which is now Waverly Road just off the LIE north service road. Anyone from OW know for sure?

If HPHS is referring to the brick wall, that was from Knole,

Knole is separated from Guys Lane & Wheatley by several other estates. I don't see the Knole property wrapping around Rosemary Hall north and then west and then south and then back west again around the Regan property and then back north again.

there are two totally different brick walls. The one at Guys Lane may belong to another estate, not Overland. the wikimapia location of Overland does appear to be incorrect.

I'm not the originator of the wikimapia tag. Zach? Waverly Road was the east entrance of a two approaches. The west entrance was at 39 Store Road. MyNas has this area labeled as "stable". Compare the shape and pattern of the brick work to the back entrance at Guys Lane - to me its the same. All the old maps show this configuration with the Rose name attached. Using Historic Aerials(1966) you can still make out the general outline of the property including the brick wall in question. The tag at wikimapia matches the area where a large clearing appears with cut out in the trees to the south.
