In order to maintain these vast properties and palatial homes, cadres of workers were recruited both locally and from abroad to fill jobs as butlers, chauffeurs, maids, cooks, dairymen, gardeners, valets and stablemen. In the Service brings the past to life with more than 80 contemporary and vintage photographs, as well as the narratives of the men and women who worked on the great estates.

I have this book....good read.
I agree with Anonymous ~ very good contents and illustrations. Acquired a copy at Old Westbury Gardens a dozen, or more, years ago !
