'Pembroke' Entrance
The front gate and entrance to 'Pembroke', the Joseph R. DeLamar estate designed by C.P.H. Gilbert c. 1916 in Glen Cove. Click HERE for all previous posts on 'Pembroke'. Photo from the Year Book of the Architectural League of New York.

Was it mentioned here previously that these gates were scrapped when the estate was developed a few years back? If so, that is so sad. Judging by the height of the worker standing there, the scale was majestic.
Thank you for the lead, "Ancient." What a sad image; someone has been hacking away at the stonework ! Hopefully the 'Wolves' wandered away with someone ~ I would hate to think they were smashed to pieces.
Great links to the entry gates glorious past and also the dismal present. Looks like the two wolves were carelessly chiseled or destroyed awhile back. How foolish vandals can be. Skanska the developers of the new housing community on the site trashed the gates during construction. RT
Very Good, Doug Floor Plan ~ though I doubt DeLamar had any worries about paying the bills ! I've seen identical statues of those wolves before; same pose ~ same posture. No doubt DeLamar saw them as well. The great Pembroke vases, now at Templeton and which Zach uses as his icon, were copies of the ones at Whitehall in Palm Beach, built a decade prior to Pembroke ~ which, no doubt, DeLamar saw. If only I could remember the source; the illustration.
The statues once at the Pembroke gates are modeled on those of the "Molossi Dogs" at the Vatican Museum in Rome ~ which are ancient Roman copies of Greek originals from the third century B.C. It took a while, but I finally found the source !

One wonders where the WOLVES 'wandered' away to ?
My, my. These gates leave little doubt about DeLamar's material success in the world.

Somewhere, it seems.

Is there a symbolism to these wolves? All I can think of is Mr. DeLamar put them there as a joke -- the wolves are at the gate.
