'The Downs'
'The Downs', the Hallett Alsop Borrowe residence built c. 1900 in the Shinnecock Hills. Borrowe was the vice-president of the Equitable Life Assurance Company and fought with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. 'The Downs' is no longer extant.
Aldop Borrower, by some accounts, was a but if a cad. He was the cause of the divorce of Mrs. Astor's daughter Charlotte and her husband, Coleman Drayton in 1894. Mr. Drayton even challenged Borrowe to a duel. It was shaping up as the biggest society divorce ever, until a couple of months later the WK Vanderbilts called it splits, knocking the Drayton's off the front page. And the rest is history.
Bonus Trivia Round, Six Degrees of Separation Edition. After the Drayton Divorce (and Borrowe didn't marry Mrs. Drayton), the Drayton estate in NJ was sold to John Dryden, whose grandson married Brooke Russell, who later married Mrs. Drayton's nephew, Vincent. Got all that?
I got it... Dryden Kuser, who was the father of Brooke's son, Anthony Kuser who later changed his last name to Marshall, after Brooke's second husband Buddy Marshall, the brother of Marshall Field III's wife Evelyn Marshall Field who became Mrs Diego Suarez... got it?
