'Chateau Ivor'

'Chateau Ivor', the Charles A. Gould estate designed by John Russell Pope c. 1908 in Dix Hills with landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers. Gould was an accountant in Buffalo and organized a steel coupling manufacturing company named the Gould Coupler Company. He was Commodore of the American Yacht Club and was also in charge of the Gould Realty Company which had numerous land holdings in New York City. Gould hired Pope to design him a hunting and sporting retreat that sat on one of the highest points on Long Island and consisted of over 1,000 acres. Following his death in 1927 the estate went through a series of owners until it was demolished in 1954. Click HERE to see where 'Chateau Ivor' would have stood on google earth.

Wonderful and a tad odd at the same time. But nothing about it says "huntin' and fishin'" to me. And what do you suppose they hunted in the middle of Long Island? It's a bit 'off the beaten track from the fox hunting at Old Westbury.

The Gardener's Cottage is here - http://wikimapia.org/#lat=40.8123476&lon=-73.3480579&z=18&l=0&m=b&show=/13794152/

The hunting and sporting theme supposedly was modeled after 18th-century Loire Valley shooting boxes. Here's a Louis XV/Pompadour get away - http://wikimapia.org/#lat=48.8338766&lon=2.1608305&z=15&l=0&m=b&show=/13762962/The-Butard-Hunting-Pavilion
Pope designed a similar look to Vanderbilt's LIMP Petit Trianon Hotel - http://wikimapia.org/#lat=40.8245917&lon=-73.1283367&z=18&l=0&m=b&show=/5271761/LIMP-Long-Island-Motor-Parkway-Eastern-Terminus&search=limp

Why do you think it was demolished?

This house always leaves me scratching my head----it's like something in Alice in Wonderland AFTER they try the mushrooms. Elegant details, elegant floorplan, and looking up at that roof must have really cricked a few necks.

perhaps when our other interested parties leave comments with new and thrilling coordinates they could be linked in so that dinosaurs like me with failing eye site could see what they are referring to .....

you know i like quirky but OMG!!!!!! - aren't we overdoing it. i would think all those folks whining about Idle Hour would be rolling on the floor and foaming at the mouth about this one. well, there's one thing for sure. these architects must be the first documented users of LSD cause they had to be on some kind of hallucenogenic drug to come up with this thing. i like creativity but hold on there. what were they thinking????? it looks like Dr. Seuss- it just needs two of those trees at the sides that look like pom poms. compared to the outside, the interior is bland. how could somebody come home to this every day and not say OMG. i couldn't do it. and i agree, nothing about this sez hunting and fishing unless you are hunting for the key to the bulldozer and fishing for the name or a real architect. WHEW!!!!!
and i hope they didn't pay the landscaper much. he probably took one look and thought, "do i really want my name connected to this - hmmmn, maybe not"

The exterior photos posted were taken not long after completion. There are photos taken years later when the plantings had grown in and matured, with Ivy climbing etc.. and is much more visually appealing.
