Some Long Island Country Estates Part II
Part II of Richard Schermerhorn Jr.'s 'Some Long Island Country Estates' from a 1908 issue of House & Garden. Featured in Part II are 'The Manse', originally the William C. Whitney estate designed by McKim, Mead & White and 'Knole', originally the Herman Duryea estate designed by Carrere & Hastings.

zach, where do you suppose those Whitney party and service roads are/ were ? so cool, not even hard pavement yet.
Whitney-Phipps-Garvan road (originally Whitney-Mortimer-Stow road) is accessed off of Glen Cove road just past Spring Hill (called the 'party road' in the article), though it has long been closed off. There are a handful of service roads that still run through the back portion of the Old Westbury Country Club that I'm sure were original.
