'The Manse' Interiors

Three interior shots of 'The Manse', the William Collins Whitney estate designed by McKim, Mead & White c. 1898 to 1902 in Old Westbury. After W.C. died in 1904 his son Harry Payne inherited the house. The main residence was demolished when H.P.'s son Cornelius had Delano & Aldrich design him a new house in 1941. McKim, Mead, and of course, Stanford White, excelled like no others at this sort of rich, dense, muscular interior

Hey Zach,
You mention that this home was torn down by C.V., do you have any pics of what he built in place of? Thanks,
Adam

About 60 years ago, Delano & Aldrich gave some of their residential clients a green-bordered ceramic dish, about 8 x 4 inches. Each dish showed a rendering of their particular house.

(I now use one of them as a soap dish. As it could just as easily be used as an ashtray, it may be that there aren't many others left.)

So these must be the interiors in which Gloria Vanderbilt spent her blighted youth during the custody battle between her mother and her aunt, Harry Payne Whitney's widow. Grimly appropriate.
