'Eastfair' Front Gate

The front gate to 'Eastfair', the Sherman Mills Fairchild estate designed by Forster & Gallimore c. 1930 in Lloyd Harbor. Fairchild was founder and chairman of Fairchild Camera and Instrument Company and invented the flash camera with powered magnesium. He also developed an aerial camera and started an aerial survey company in 1924. Though that business soon failed it led Fairchild to develop airplanes suited for mapmaking and charting. He was also a director at IBM (where his father was a founder) and his obituary states that he was reputed to be the single biggest shareholder in the company. He passed away at the age of 74 in 1971. Click HERE to see 'Eastfair' on google earth and HERE on bing.

Hi Zach: I just found you! Your blog is a fantastic walk through my childhood. I went to school on an old Grace estate in Old Westbury and grew up in Glen Cove. I'm looking forward to exploring all the fabulous architecture on the North Shore. Then, I'll pop into the city with you!

Beautiful...I assume still in private hands,( I hope)? I've taken recently to driving around Lloyd Harbor......a magical place. I hope those who are fortunate enough to live there appreciate the beauty and peace.

Did anyone see the Gold Coast special on channel 21 tonight?

Neat! Just looking around for Diahn McGrath... I worked for her in her law practice in the early 90s. I remember this place. Never knew it was an actual castle with a name. Cool. Yes, very nice people.
