'Bagatelle'

'Bagatelle', the Thomas Hastings estate designed by himself (of Carrere & Hastings) c. 1908 in Old Westbury. This was the first incarnation of 'Bagatelle' that would go on to burn down but Hastings would rebuild to the same specifications in 1913. When Zach posted 'Bagatelle' on April 1, 2011 I wrote a lengthy comment about how much privacy this house has in its design & I was sure Thomas Hastings would hate the current loss of privacy in the back yard. LGB responded that landscaping in the 'Stone Arches' neighborhood still allows privacy to be maintained even on reduced acreage -- good, because 'Bagatelle' is such a good looking house. I hope its current owners enjoy living there. Wasn't this house recently for sale?

Sorry, I should have said, "I'm surprised this house is still for sale;" although some of the "updates" are not that attractive (like what was done to the dining room). But the bones are still great.

Quite a few dubious modern/contemporary homes surrounding this classic manor house.

I wonder if the original owners (of the new structures) boasted to friends, et al of having an Old Westbury address yet having brought nothing to the architectural table and frankly eroding the stately prominence of the area.

The Sotheby's ad makes it look as if the house is right next to the expressway, when in fact it's not.

They should fix that.

elegantly conceived and executed. What a shame that progress has reached to its very door....and bad taste within...

As for the interior:

The interiors look very well preserved and because of the winding entry drive and fairly decent size plot, the estate gives the impression of being much larger and more secluded than it actually is. Love the entry courtyard and the paneled walls and plaster ceiling in the living room. Thhe stair hall is regal. Hopefully it continues to have sympathetic owners.

The property's subdivision was unfortunately very unsympathetic to what Hastings was trying to accomplish. There is little feeling of privacy in the rear yard and the view from the rear has been obliterated.

The interiors aren't much preserved either. Not at least to the idea Hastings was looking for.

Beautiful brick work over the arch, I love the older homes.
