The miracle of photography- who would guess that these were taken in a ramshackle, decrepit mess. And the house shines in comparison to the grounds. I don't think anyone has ventured to the west side of the property in a decade. It is a mass of broken limbs and brambles. Winfield may not be my all time favorite house, but my blood boils every time I pass the place- sadly a daily occurrence.

By the way- this is probably old news to y'all, but half Pudding Half Sauce has a beyond first rate blog to add to Old Long Island and Down East Dillettante's. I'm going to have to quit my day job to follow the first rate work all of you do. It would certainly be more intriguing if only I could convince my family that they didn't need to eat.

Happy Fourth.

Wonderful photos ~ many Thanks Ed Crowley and Zach !!! One keep hearing of the deplorable state of the house ~ are these recent images, or were they taken many years ago ?

Unless otherwise noted all of Eddie's photos were taken this year.

Aboslutely fantastic photos of the incredible interiors of Winfield Hall and yes you would think the place was being maintained as a landmark property should be. Photography hides alot. The west terraced gardens are indeed a travesty of neglect and careless ownership.

Also HPHS does have a great blog and recently a number of his posts have simultaneously presented additional period photos of homes showcasesd on OLI, as his recent post of Winfiled Hall.

THe marble stairhall is still one of the most opulent built on Long Island and beautiful. Seeing the music room with its cove lighting on and curtains pulled back, highlighting all the increbile ceiling details is wonderful.

The last photo after the dining room shots does not appear to be a first floor room but the room over teh porte-cochere.

This property deserves a better fate and owner than it currently has.

A small example of the current state of stewardship at Winfield Hall: when last I was up "close and personal" to the house, one of the rotted frames of the huge windows on either side of the music room fireplace was in such poor condition that it couldn't be closed, and it was lashed together with rubber coated electric wire. It was also clear that water pours through the roof of the adjoining west porch. Shameful.

Is the current owner really 90 years old?

Uh, where's the stuff? There's little-to-no furniture in these rooms... Reggie

I was here about 20 years back when Pall Corp still owned it and ran picnics for their employees and their families. These rooms were, at the time, galleries for an art show. I don't recall any of these gilt details which makes me think they had been removed or painted over. I will see if I can find any photos from inside the building. I do remember the garden labyrinth as well-maintained, and scary for my then-7-yr-old sister-in-law. :)
