The Westbury House Playhouse

The playhouse to the J. Watson Webb estate designed by James O'Connor sometime in the early 1920s in Old Westbury.  While the playhouse has since been demolished, the structure is very similar to the design O'Connor employed at 'Crossroads', the W.R. Grace Jr. estate also in Old Westbury, built around the same time (without an indoor pool).  Click HERE to see where the Webb playhouse stood on google earth and HERE to see the indoor tennis court at 'Crossroads' on bing.

Beautifully landscaped exterior and a comfortable interior. A gentleman's estate of great charm.
What more could anyone ask for. I love this Blog.

One looks at the Webb's burgeoning collection of Americana furnishing this pleasure dome--and remembers with amusement how distressed her mother, Mrs. Havemayer, collector of old masters and impressionists, was by her daughter's collecting of early American 'junk'.

Off-topic, but the mention of W.R. Grace brings up the fact that crooner Andy Williams - who just died on Sep 26th - had purchased W.R. Grace's "Twin Trees" estate in Aiken, SC in 1980 from the heirs and owned it until 1985.

It was seriously damaged in 1986 while undergoing restoration with the new owners.

When was this play house demolished? I remember going to an indoor tennis court in this area back in the early 80's.

Boy oh boy. A really great looking play house but a very closed in almost suffocating home interior crammed to the rafters with too much "stuff"
