'Pond Hollow Farm', the Julian Peabody estate designed/enlarged by himself c. 1910 in Old Westbury. Peabody was a partner in the architecture firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown and son of Charles A. Peabody of Cold Spring Harbor. Peabody and his wife (Celestin E. Hitchcock, daughter of Thomas Hitchcock Sr.) died in 1935 when the ship they were on, the Mohawk, collided with a freighter off New Jersey and sank. The poor, poor thing. STRIPPED of its landscape! What is the matter with people?? Zach do the current owners of any of these old places, read your wonderful blog? Do they ever comment on how "changed" things are? Do they ever realize what they've done to these lovely old homes?
Anonymous, the poor thing is stripped of far more than its landscape. I know that one can't legislate taste, but what's happening in this era of gut renovations and 'upgrade fever' is indeed shocking, and a lot of beautiful babies are getting thrown out with the bathwater. This house is a particularly baffling example.
Incomprehensible how anyone could strip such a lovely structure of all its charm to the point where it's difficult to determine if there is a single good "bone" remaining...
You don't suppose Jocelyn Wildenstein has branched out into home renovations?
The Ancient, I'm sure Jocelyn would've retorted "meow".
I always liked Peabody's well executed "The Balcony" in Aiken, SC for his relatives:
