'Whitewood', the Donald Scott Sr. estate designed by Dana & Murphy c. 1912 in Lloyd Harbor. Scott was a professor of anthropology and archaeology at Harvard. You have to love all the attributions to Stanford White ("attributed to", "believed to be by" etc) even though he'd be dead for a while...
Clearly no one bothered to look it up.
I know who bought the estate and while I won't divulge specifics I will say the house is not in danger.

One thing I gleaned from Mosette Broderick's book about MM&W is that White did some large number of off-the-books projects for clients, and he may not always have told his partners about it. Sometimes it was no more than quick sketch; other times the contribution was more finished. Also, MM&W itself used White's work on unbuilt projects for many years after his death.
So maybe all of us (myself included) scoff too quickly. At least sometimes.
interesting that on the bing there are only three chimney stacks,while on the top picture here and on the next picture there seem to be four chimney's, one is obscured by the large tree. the one that is missing is the second one from the left as you look from the garage in the top picture.
An interesting article (online) from The Aiken Horse (Sep 2010) on several structures in that South Caroline winter colony with White claims, but thin evidence

Another White claimed property on the market now is Skenewood, a lovely c.1904 brick colonial, overlooking Lake Champlain:

All harmless I suppose and if it helps preserve a home from being razed if there is even a whiff of it having been done by White, well then I suppose it has its value.
The Danile Gale article states that they were responsible for the sale of Knole, Kirby Hill and Land's End, but fails to mention that Land's End was demolished and Knole and Kirby Hill greatly divided, with Knole being left to ruin.
I had the incredible privilege of living on this estate for over 15 years. I'd painted the fence around the pool every summer for Robin Hadley, and done odd jobs around the property. After I was married in my early 20's, she invited my wife and I to live in one of the caretaker's houses. I have thousands of photos from my time there, including many from after it was abandoned. I even have a copy of the original prints. It was a gorgeous home and an incredible property. I'll never forget Robin's generosity towards me and my family, and will always cherish the many years I spent at Whitewood.
