I kept wondering why the portico was placed on the side. Certainly not to enjoy a smoke and the evening breeze, it faces west – too hot in the summertime.
Then a friend of mine said, “The house is on a hill, right? The porch is on the side because you’re meant to enjoy the view, to look at something.”
Okay then, I'll bite. What’s to the west worth looking at? There’s the western part of Long Island, Brooklyn, and the skyline of Manhattan.
I would guess to say that, at that time, the tallest building in that skyline would have been his Woolworth building. He was showing off his big tall building.
I wonder if he had a telescope in his office to see his house, his big white house, out there on Long Island.
