'Beaupre'

'Beaupre', the Thomas Suffern Tailer Jr. estate designed by Walker & Gillette c. 1932 in Lattingtown. The house was commissioned following Tailer's wedding to Florence Baker by the bride's father George F. Baker II, owner of 'Vikings Cove' in Lattingtown (also a Walker & Gillette designed house). Tailer was an amateur golfer champion. The house along with 4 acres is currently for sale for $5,995,000, click HERE to see the listing on Daniel Gale Sotheby's. Click HERE to see 'Beaupre' on google earth and HERE on bing.

Did you see this on the listing?

Formerly The Summer Residence Of The Duke And Duchess Of Windsor

(What could this possibly mean? Do you suppose someone hired them to do a long summer week-end of dinner parties back in the Fifties?)

Someone must have lent the house to the notorious freeloaders. They never rented anything if they could help it. I seem to remember some story of another Long Island house loaned the Windsors because they were going to buy it, which of course, they didn't.

Charming house, wonderfully colored, with the white washed brick, and french blue-grey shutters...

I must concur with TDED in that the use of the term "rent" does suggest payment;> While I'm speaking out of turn here I don't believe the couple paid one quid in their global tour.

To have the honor of the original 20th Century celebutants stay in residence must have cost many an American millionaire a small fortune.

This is such a lovely home (some interior design choices aside) but I shudder at the thought of being so close to a school. At first glance from the forecourt towards the facade the property looks relatively small and then you see how sizable the rear portion is.

I rented the servents quarters at Beaupre'. I believe that the Duke and Duchess were frequent guests. On the servant bell system is labled Duke and Duchess

The Duke and Duchess were very close friends of Florence Baker Tailer's mother, Edith Kane Baker who lived right "around the bend" at Viking's Cove. And among old timers, there was always a hot debate about what the Duke and Duchess did and didn't pay for. My guess is that in the late 1940's- early 1950's when they would have rented Beaupre, the Duke and Duchess would have been considered enough of a draw by the local swells that if any rent was even charged, it was nominal at best.

A related story that I have always loved: Henry Francis Dupont's wife, the very grand Ruth Wales Dupont was no fan of the Duchess. Shortly after Winterthur was opened to the public for the first time, the Duchess, clearly angeling for tickets, approached Mrs. Dupont at a party in New york and said, "I hear that your museum is spectacular. Everyone raves about it, but says that it is impossible to get in to". To which Mrs. Dupont replied, "Yes, you're quite right. You should be sure to write for tickets several months before you want to go".

Six Million, and it's got two school ball fields and six school tennis courts within spitting distance of the main rooms of the house? I don't think so. Nope. I'm far further from the playing fields of a school than this house is, and I can still hear the ball hitting the bat and the crowds...

while i love the style of this place, i have to agree that a 40 foot privacy fence should be thrown in for the 6 mill. alas, it also has suffered the fate of all survivors - agrophobia - fear of gardens. it has a small greenhouse but no sign of conscious landscaping unless you like that desert in the backyard or the piece by the tennies goes with the house.
predictable restrained 30's interiors for this kind of house but i like the little norman village feel. landscaping looks better on sotheby's. nice gates and it looks like you'll need them. just grill a few of those little buggers on the 110 volt perimeter fence and they'll stay away.

security word def - "sedio" - what i use to grow my veggios.

The greenhouse is made of plastic, the original must have been torn down. I planted many plants in that greenhouse, but there was no running water. I had to carry the water to the greenhouse. the owner was broke and could barely maintain the house. The estate had been for sale for at least 15 years. You are right, kids did party in the greenhouse, i had to empty out the beer cans. There is no landscaping or pool. There were two red foxes who cruised the grounds.

I almost bought a small estate in Oyster Bay Cove around 1998 on Grace Lane, the specs were about the same, at the time it was around 4.7 mil and was a bit dilapodated... I really loved it. It was next to a golf course too... the funny thing is, at the main gate there was a plaque that said "Beaupre"... I just googled it, and it is definitely not this place (actually, the one I saw was much nicer, and now it looks super-renovated and seems spectacular from the air - they even moved the pool, but this listing has no pool).
You can see the Beaupre I saw here http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=qt7mmn8w61n3&lvl=19.47502952542303&dir=16.166873704807233&sty=b&sp=Point.qt6wj28w65pn_Grace%20Ln%2C%20Oyster%20Bay%2C%20NY%2011771____~Point.qt7nx88w61vt_Oyster%20Bay%20Cove%20Beaupre____&where1=Grace%20Ln%2C%20Oyster%20Bay%2C%20NY%2011771&q=grace%20lane%2C%20oyster%20bay%20cove%20NY
