The J.F.D. Lanier Estate

DED please extravagance and good taste architecturally don't always go hand in hand esp. in the enclaves of the rich. that's the great part about these houses. they had lots of money ans spent it for houses they liked and the hell with the critics. to me, it's the only way to build. who are you building for - screw the neighbors and the critics. if the owner doesn't like the product, why bother? i like both iterations of the towers - they convert this house from another Tara into something really eclectic (my favorite period of architecture) Sunridge Hall is an abortion compared to the original esp since the stairs down to the garden end up in someone else's backyard.

I thought the towers were a nice touch. The grounds must have been impressive in their day.
Truly, how odd is that composition, with the classical porticos and the ungainly towers?
I wonder why they couldn't have left the original home,(which I love), and build Sunridge Hall on a different parcel of the estate.
